Plan Your Space
Choose interlock when you need a hard surface you walk or drive on: a driveway, a front walk, the landing at your steps or a path that links them. Interlock pavers lock together over a compacted base, so they suit areas that carry cars, foot traffic and Ottawa freeze and thaw.
It is a good fit if you want one pattern or colour to carry from the driveway to the door, or if a worn or uneven surface needs to be replaced along with the base under it.
See our interlock installation page for the options and questions to discuss.
Choose a patio when the goal is a place to sit, eat or gather outside, usually next to the house or the back door. The planning starts with how many people will use it, the furniture it needs to hold and how you get to it from inside.
A patio can be built with pavers, slabs or natural stone, and it often connects to walkways, steps, low walls or lighting.
See our patio installation page for the options and questions to discuss.
Choose walls and stonework when your yard slopes or changes level: you want a flat area for a patio or lawn, steps between two levels, or a steep bank turned into terraces or raised beds.
The questions here are about holding soil and moving water, so wall height, drainage behind the wall and what sits above or below it shape the design as much as the stone you choose.
See our retaining walls page for the options and questions to discuss.
